Off the cliffs of the Portuguese town of Nazaré, big wave surfers face some of the most powerful waves in the world. What was once a quiet fishing village on Europe’s western edge has, within just a few years, become a global hotspot for extreme surf sports.
Among those pushing the limits here is Sebastian Steudtner, world record holder in big wave surfing. In Nazaré, the pursuit of ever-larger waves comes with real risk — making the preparedness of the safety team essential. For corpuls on mission – Big Wave Hotspot Nazaré, corpuls was granted the opportunity to accompany the team during a training exercise beneath the now world-famous red lighthouse overlooking the break.
The film documents the intersection of extreme sport, medical readiness, and human responsibility. Rather than focusing on spectacle alone, it highlights the quiet precision and preparation required to respond when conditions turn critical — where seconds matter and decisions must be made under pressure.
Produced as a multilingual project, the film was released in German and Portuguese, supported by subtitles and complemented by four short-form edits for social media. Together, the different formats provide an authentic insight into the realities behind big wave surfing — and the medical and safety infrastructure that makes it possible.
